04 — Local Culture
Respect & Awareness
Understanding local culture makes every journey richer — for you and the communities you visit.
Respect Local Customs
Research greetings, social norms, and taboos before arrival. What is polite at home may be offensive elsewhere. Ask your guide for destination-specific tips.
Dress Appropriately
Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples, mosques, and sacred sites. Pack a light scarf or sarong for versatility. Follow dress codes displayed at entrances.
Photography Etiquette
Always ask permission before photographing people. Respect no-photography signs in sacred or sensitive locations. Avoid using flash in religious spaces.
Tipping Culture
Tipping customs vary widely. In some countries it is expected; in others it may cause offence. Your guide will advise on local expectations.
Religion & Sacred Sites
Remove footwear before entering temples, homes, and mosques where indicated. Dress modestly, speak quietly, and follow all site-specific protocols.
Wildlife & Nature
Never feed or touch wild animals. Maintain safe distances on safaris and wildlife experiences. Only purchase ethically certified wildlife products.
Environmental Protection
Dispose of litter responsibly. Avoid single-use plastics where possible. Respect nature reserves, coral reefs, and protected areas.
Responsible Tourism
Support local businesses, guides, and markets. Choose experiences that benefit communities. Your spending choices have a real impact on local livelihoods.
05 — Weather
Seasonal Travel Guide

Recommended Gear
06 — Currency & Payments
Managing Your Money
Local Currency
Carry a small amount of local cash for markets, tipping, and rural areas. Exchange at local banks or ATMs for the best rates — avoid airport kiosks.
Credit Cards
Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted. American Express may not work everywhere. Always have a backup card stored separately from your wallet.
ATMs
ATMs are widely available in cities. Check your bank’s international withdrawal fees in advance. Withdraw during business hours in well-lit, secure locations.
Digital Payments
Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted in many destinations, particularly in cities and hotels. Acceptance is more limited in markets and rural areas.
Exchange Rate Tips
Compare rates before exchanging. Never accept the first rate offered at tourist spots. Currency exchange apps help you track real-time rates on the go.
Consumption Tax
Many destinations add GST, VAT, or service charges to bills. Check whether these are included in displayed prices or added at checkout.
Notify Your Bank
Always inform your bank of your travel dates and destinations before departure to prevent security blocks on international transactions.
Tipping Guide
Tipping culture varies globally. Your guide will provide destination-specific advice on appropriate amounts for drivers, guides, restaurants, and hotels.
07 — Connectivity
Staying Connected
Local SIM Card
Purchasing a local SIM is usually the most cost-effective option for data and calls. Available at airports, convenience stores, and phone retailers.
eSIM
eSIM technology lets you add a local data plan without a physical SIM. Compatible with most modern smartphones — activate before you depart for convenience.
Wi-Fi
Hotels, cafes, and airports generally offer free Wi-Fi. Download content and maps offline before entering areas with limited connectivity.
VPN
A VPN is recommended in countries with restricted internet access to securely access your usual apps and services while abroad.
Power Adapters
Plug types and voltage vary by country. Check your destination’s socket type and bring a universal adapter. Most modern devices are dual-voltage.
Emergency Numbers
Save the local emergency number, your travel insurance hotline, BoxHillTravel’s 24/7 support, and your country’s embassy before departure.
08 — Transportation
Getting Around
Airport Transfers
BoxHillTravel arranges all included airport transfers. Your guide will meet you at arrivals with a name board. Details are provided in your pre-departure documents.
Group Meeting Points
Each tour departure includes a designated meeting location and time. Arrive punctually — late arrivals may cause delays for the entire group.
If You Are Running Late
Contact your guide or the BoxHillTravel emergency line immediately if you anticipate being late. Do not attempt to make your own way without informing the team.
Local Transport
Depending on the destination, tours may use private coaches, trains, tuk-tuks, boats, or small aircraft for transfers. All included transport is outlined in your itinerary.
Independent Taxis & Ride-Share
For independent travel, use reputable apps such as Uber, Grab, or Gett where available. Always confirm the fare before departure in destinations without metered cabs.
Trains & Local Buses
Many destinations offer excellent public transport. Your guide can advise on routes, ticketing, and safety. Keep valuables secure in busy transit hubs.
09 — Tour Expectations
What to Expect on Tour
Understanding the daily rhythm of a BoxHillTravel tour helps you get the most from every moment.
Daily Rhythm
Most tour days begin between 7:00–8:30am with breakfast, followed by morning sightseeing, a midday break, and afternoon activities. Evenings are often free to explore independently.
Breakfast Times
Breakfast is typically served from 6:30am and group departures usually follow between 8:00–9:00am. Your guide will confirm exact timings the evening before.
Daily Briefings
Your guide will hold a brief group meeting each evening to outline the following day’s schedule, meeting times, and any important information.
Luggage Handling
For multi-day tours, luggage is transported between hotels by the group vehicle. Leave bags outside your room by the time specified — usually 7:00am.
Hotel Check-In & Out
Standard check-in is 3:00pm and check-out is 11:00am. Your guide will store luggage securely if rooms are not yet ready on arrival days.
Free Time
Most itineraries include structured free time for independent exploration, shopping, or relaxation. Your guide will provide recommendations for each destination.
Optional Activities
Optional excursions are available at additional cost on most tours. Decisions can be made on tour — your guide will explain what’s available and how to book.
Your Tour Guide
Your BoxHillTravel guide is your expert companion throughout the journey — responsible for the group’s safety, logistics, cultural insights, and overall wellbeing.
Driver & Local Guides
In addition to your main guide, local specialist guides are engaged at key sites for deeper expertise. Drivers are professional and licensed in each country.

11 — FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
We strongly recommend it for all BoxHillTravel bookings. Travel insurance covers unexpected medical emergencies, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or delayed baggage, and many other unforeseen situations. Without it, costs overseas can be substantial.
Drone regulations vary significantly by country and in some cases require local permits or are prohibited entirely. Please check the specific rules for each destination on your itinerary and ensure your drone is declared at customs where required.
Most BoxHillTravel tours suggest a soft-sided bag with a maximum of 20 kg checked luggage plus 7 kg carry-on. Some remote destinations or small aircraft transfers may have stricter weight limits, which will be specified in your pre-departure documents.
Absolutely — many of our travellers are solo adventurers. Our small-group tours are a wonderful way to meet like-minded people from around the world. Single supplement options are available if you prefer a private room throughout.
If your inbound flight is delayed, please contact BoxHillTravel as soon as possible using our 24/7 emergency line. Our team will do everything possible to assist with transfers, accommodation, and rejoining the group. This is also why travel insurance with flight delay cover is important.
This varies by destination. In many parts of Europe and North America tap water is safe; in much of Asia, Africa, and South America bottled or filtered water is recommended. Your tour guide will advise you on local water safety at each stop.
It's useful to carry a small amount of local currency for immediate expenses upon arrival (transport, tips, snacks). However, airport exchange rates are often poor — local ATMs or city exchange offices typically offer better rates.
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops in most destinations, but cash remains essential for local markets, small vendors, tipping, and rural areas. Visa and Mastercard have the broadest acceptance globally.
