Tour Overview

Embark on a captivating journey through Peru's historical enigmas and cultural gems. Experience UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the breathtaking Machu Picchu and the historic city of Cusco, guided by knowledgeable local leaders. Traverse the snow-capped Andes while uncovering age-old traditions that still thrive in the serene valleys shrouded in mist.

Itinerary

Arrive at your destination whenever you wish. An arrival transfer is included.
Accommodation

Hotel Antigua Miraflores Please be aware that if you signed up for the Lima Cooking Class, it does not include extra nights in Lima. We highly suggest arranging accommodation before your trip. You will be collected from your hotel around 10:00 am (10:30 from August to December) and taken to a local market and restaurant to prepare and enjoy a traditional Peruvian meal. You should return to your hotel by approximately 13:00. Note that hot water shortages and power outages can occasionally occur in Peru, even in upgraded accommodations. We appreciate your understanding as these issues are beyond our control.

Take an early flight to Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire, followed by a drive through the picturesque Sacred Valley to Urubamba. Explore the terraced salt pans of Maras, which have been utilized for salt production since before the Inca era, and tour the Inca archaeological site of Moray—thought to be an agricultural lab where priests experimented with soils and crops. Later, indulge in a meal featuring local specialties that have been prepared by chefs in this region for over a millennium.
Accommodation

Hotel Mabey Urubamba Expect some very early morning departures on this journey to optimize our time and experience as much of Peru as possible in a week.

Meals:BreakfastDinner
Continue your exploration of the Sacred Valley with a visit to Parque de la Papa, or Potato Park, a rural Andean community dedicated to preserving hundreds of native potato varieties. During this unique experience, a local guide will lead you through the park to discuss potato cultivation, traditional weaving, and the cultural significance of both practices to Andean life. We’ll also explore the remarkable Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo and Pisac and enjoy a meal at the community-supported Parwa Restaurant in Huchuy Qosqo.

Hotel Mabey Urubamba

Meals:BreakfastLunch
Transfer early to Ollantaytambo station and board a train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Ride through the lush Andean landscape, soaking in breathtaking views of ancient ruins and local life. Arrive at your hotel in Aguas Calientes, where you can choose from several optional activities: relax in the local hot springs, visit a beautiful botanical garden, or browse the handicraft stalls in town as you prepare for an early start the next day to visit Machu Picchu.
Accommodation

Hotel Taypikala Machupicchu Please keep in mind that while the town offers several amenities, it is also geographically isolated, which means services can sometimes be more basic than expected. As the sole access point for travelers visiting Machu Picchu, the infrastructure has developed rapidly, often without proper planning, and the focus may not always be on providing the level of service you might find in other parts of the country.

Meals:Breakfast
This morning, embark on a guided tour of Machu Picchu—the 15th-century Inca citadel famously brought to global attention by archaeologist Hiram Bingham in the April 1913 issue of National Geographic magazine. After exploring the temples and terraces of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site, travel back to Cusco by train.
Accommodation

Taypikala Hotel Cusco

Meals:Breakfast
Spend the day soaking in the sights of charming Cusco. You can choose to visit Plaza de Armas, the historic main square; the 15th-century Sacsayhuaman fortress; or explore some of the city's museums and ornate churches. In the evening, we’ll head to the Cusco Planetarium to learn about the significance of astronomy to the ancient Inca and, weather permitting, gaze at the sparkling night sky through telescopes.
Accommodation

Taypikala Hotel Cusco Please note: if you reserve the Cusco Cooking Class, you will be picked up from your hotel around 12:30 and taken to a local market and restaurant to prepare and enjoy a traditional Peruvian meal. You will return to your hotel at approximately 16:00.

Meals:Breakfast
Fly back to Lima. Spend the remainder of the day at your leisure in the Peruvian capital. Visit the San Francisco Monastery, part of Lima’s World Heritage-listed historic center, and explore its famous catacombs. Stroll across Plaza Mayor, the city’s oldest public square, and enjoy Peruvian tapas and a tasting of pisco sours before heading back to your hotel.
